Mid-19th century kilim from the Reyhanlı region in the far southeast of Turkey
This kilim, woven in two parts, is very fine, and its colors are very characteristic of this region.
However, the pattern and color combinations are quite free, suggesting that it was not woven for commercial purposes, unlike many kilims from this region
Reyhanlı kilims are renowned as some of the finest kilims in Turkey, both for the spinning of the wool and for the precision of the design and weaving.
This gives them a particularly silky appearance. This is probably due to the influence of populations from the western Caucasus who lived in this region in the mid-19th century.
The quality of these kilims suggests that they were intended for sale, unlike other Anatolian kilims, which were intended for personal use. Production ceased in this region at the beginning of the 20th century.
The colors used, derived from natural dyes, are generally contrasting, with bright reds, terracotta, pinks, different shades of blue, greens, and whites.
Data sheet
Every day: you can vacuum, but not at minimum power. Avoid vacuum cleaners with rotating brushes.
Liquid spills: mop up as much liquid as possible and rub gently with a damp cloth.
Grease stains: soak up as much grease as possible with paper towels or terre de Sommières.
Accidents involving animals: in this case, it's very important to act quickly, as animals release acids that will damage wool. Treat your kilim following the same advice as for spilled liquids.
For a more thorough cleaning: it may be that the stains have not been completely treated, or that over the years, despite regular maintenance, dust has settled in and a grey veil has set in. In such cases, it's time to turn to a professional.
That's why we offer a cleaning service, carried out by a company specialized in manual and wet carpet cleaning.
