With over 50 years' experience, Galerie TRIFF shares its tips and tricks for choosing the right kilim, ensure it takes its place in your home and remains in good condition for the rest of its life.

Advice on choosing the right kilim

Choosing the right size

The first thing to determine, even before choosing the motif, is the size required.  Depending on the destination, the rules differ. The only rule common to all spaces is that it's better to choose a kilim that's a little too big than a little too small. In fact, a rug that's too small will make the room smaller, whereas a larger rug will make it bigger.

In front of a sofa, the length of the kilim should be at least equal to the width of the sofa. Sofa on the rug or off the rug? There aren't really any rules, but the kilim's motif may determine the choice.

Under a dining room table, add about 50 cm on each side of the table to provide space for chairs. This rule is particularly useful for knotted rugs. As kilim is not very thick, the back legs of chairs can protrude from the kilim.

In a corridor, leave at least 10 cm between the kilim and the wall.

Traditional or contemporary

Antique kilims, with their geometric patterns, can be easily integrated into any interior, whether the furniture is classic or designer. Contemporary kilims, on the other hand, will fit in naturally with contemporary interiors, but also with more classical ones, due to the materials used and the results obtained. It's all a matter of taste, but we're also here to advise you.

Kilim care

How do you care for your kilim on day-to-day basis?

On a daily basis, you can vacuum your kilim, but not at maximum power. Avoid vacuum cleaners with rotating brushes.

How do I remove stains?

Whatever the type of stain, you need to remove it as quickly as possible, by following the advice below.

If you spill red wine, don't use salt! This pseudo-grandmotherly trick fixes the stain rather than treating it. And generally speaking, when a drink is spilled, the best solution is water, but beware of the dyes used on your carpet.

If the wools have been dyed with vegetable dyes ("collector's kilims" or some new kilims), you can wet the stain and rub it in, then blot it dry. Perrier is particularly effective for the immediate treatment of stains.

If your carpet is dyed with chemical dyes ("antique kilims"), you can use a damp cloth, but don't immerse the stain to avoid any risk of color bleeding.

For greasy stains, absorb as much grease as possible with paper towel or terre de Sommières. If a mark remains, have your carpet cleaned.

If your pet forgets or vomits on your carpet, treat your kilim with water, following the same advice as for wine stains. In this particular case, it's very important to act quickly, as animals release acids that will damage wool.

Non-slip

To prevent kilims from slipping or wrinkling on the floor, and to protect them from wear and tear caused by friction, Galerie TRIFF systematically offers a non-slip material that can be applied to the floor without the need for glue.

This material allows the kilim to stay perfectly in place, while providing an underlay that adds a little softness to the carpet.

This product is also available for sale. It is sold by the linear meter and comes in 2 widths, 200 cm or 160 cm.

Cleaning and restoration

Although kilims are easy to care for, after a few years they may need to be professionally restored to their former glory.

In fact, over the years, despite frequent vacuuming, dust settles into the carpet, a gray veil sets in and the colors lose their brilliance.

So they need to be cleaned. Most of the time, dry cleaning is proposed. Not only is this not very effective, it's also not very good for wools.

That's why we offer a cleaning service, carried out by a company specialized in manual and wet carpet washing.

Simply drop off the carpets to be cleaned at 13 boulevard Raspail Paris 7éme.

The turnaround time is about 10 days.
